Guest Speaker:

Ian Smith B. Math, M.Sc., OLS/OLIP, EP, Fluvial Geomorphologist at Lydian Environmental Consulting will be sharing the preliminary results of their study:

Novel approaches for estimating Brook Trout abundance and habitat preferences in a peri-urban headwater stream of the Niagara Peninsula.

The upper reaches of Twelve Mile Creek, Niagara’s last known coldwater stream supporting native Brook Trout, were studied to confirm species presence and estimate population abundance. Researchers used fish surveys, photos, and DNA testing to count Brook Trout and learn which stream habitats they use most, including areas with cool water, shade, rocks, groundwater, and fallen wood. The findings will guide restoration and rehabilitation of urban-impacted headwater streams in the upper Twelve Mile Creek watershed and may support future localized reintroduction of native Brook Trout into restored habitats.

Space is limited and pre-registration is required so we know how many to expect!
